Vintillect Importer Plugin (Twitter / X)

Download Your Twitter Data

Here are Twitter's instructions for downloading your data, but there are differences from the instructions which haven't been updated. So here are the updated instructions:

  1. In the left sidebar of Twitter, click "More" (3 dots), and a pop up menu will show. Click Settings and Support, and click Settings and Privacy.
  2. Your Account section will be displayed. On the right side, click "Download an archive of your data".
  3. You will prompted to enter your password, so enter it and click Next.
  4. It will want to "Verify it's you", so click Send code.
  5. Enter the code that it sent to you, whether by email or SMS.
  6. On the right side, under "X data", click "Request archive" button. A message will be shown below that it will let you know when it's ready.
  7. You will be notified by email when your Twitter data is ready to be downloaded. It may take a day for it to be ready. Click on the download link in the email.
  8. Again, verify your password, send code, and enter the code.
  9. Click the Download archive button, and again.

Settings Tab

  • Name and Email form - This is needed for an email notification to let you know that your upload has been processed and your data is ready for viewing in the other tabs.
  • WordPress Media Library Space - This plugin makes it very easy to upload lots of photos and videos very quickly. Video files especially can be very large and quickly take up space. Some website hosts limit you to 1GB of space. So come back to this Settings page after uploading lots of media to make sure you have enough space leftover.
  • File Upload - Select your Twitter data file that you downloaded from Twitter and click Upload. When it's done uploading, it will still take some time for the server to process the data and make it available in formats that this plugin can use. The page should refresh and the form will be replaced by a message and an upload ID code.
  • Email Notification - If the file processing was successful, you'll receive an email letting you know when you can refresh the settings page. When you do, it will alert you that it is updating the settings.
  • More Tabs Available - You can then click on the other tabs to view the other pages so that you can then import your data into your blog posts.
  • Reset My Upload - In the unlikely even that there was an error processing your data upload, you'll receive an email letting you know about it and you may need to re-upload your data file. In that case, you'll need to click this button to erase your upload ID and make the upload form available again. After clicking this button, you can upload a new file or you can enter the old upload ID next to Get my Settings (assuming the upload has not expired already).

Tweets Tab

  • Merge Rows By - When you change this option, it merges the rows together according to time period. The main reason for this is that it's annoying to click on a blog article and see a tiny status update. Now imagine clicking on a blog article for each and every status update. It's better to group many of them together so that there's more content on each page and less clicking.
  • Title Date Formats - With status updates, there are no titles. Instead, there's a date and time, so that's what's provided as the title. Different countries have different preferences for displaying dates and times. When you change this option, it changes how the title (date & time) in each row.
  • Import Tags - When creating a post, and if there are any tags in the tweet, it will add the tag to the blog post.
  • Default Post Status - When you make a new post, do you want it to go to Draft or Publish it already? When you are just starting out with this plugin, it is recommended that you leave it as Draft so that you can play with how you want to make these posts, make mistakes, preview them, delete those posts, and think about the best way to create posts using this plugin.
  • Import All Checked Rows - (used with the dropdown to the right) Look at the top of the table to the left of "Create Post". If you click on that checkbox, you'll notice that all the checkboxes in the table are checked for you. If you have "this page only" selected in the dropdown, then when you click the "Import All Checked Rows" button, it will only create posts for those rows that are checked on this page. But if you select "all pages", then it will create posts for all the checked rows on all pages. Use this with caution because you may create many posts for you and you may decide after that you really wanted the rows grouped differently, and then you need to delete a bunch of posts. It is recommended that you practice making some posts first individually and preview them to see how you like them presented before creating many posts.
  • Show # entries - How many rows that you want displayed on each page.
  • Minimum Date to Maximum Date - Use this calendar picker to filter the rows on date ranges. This could be useful if you want different date ranges to be grouped/merged differently. In your earlier years, you may have posted less frequently than your later years, so different time periods will have differing amounts of content.
  • Search (filter query) - (self explanatory)
  • Go to Bottom / Go to Top - Click to quickly go to the top or bottom of the page without scrolling with your mouse or trackpad.
  • Numbered Blue Boxes - These are the page list buttons. It can also include Previous and Next page links.
  • Create Post - When you click on this button, it will create one new post for that row only. That row may be a group of posts. It will either keep it as draft or publish it depending on what you selected for the Default Post Status.
  • Posted - (green row marker) This temporary label is applied when you create a blog post that includes that tweet. It helps you so that you don't have to try to remember which tweets are already imported when you change the merge group. If you leave this tab (close the page, go to a different page or tab), then these markers will disappear as they are only temporary and not stored.
  • Media cannot be imported without the Photos & Videos in Tweets option. - This notice lets you know that if you have images or videos in your posts that they will not be imported. Your posts with text and links (including image previews) will be imported though. You can purchase this option for a small fee.

Circle Tweets Tab

The options are the same as those in the Tweets Tab (above). Circle Tweets was Twitter's method of making tweets only available to members of a group (Tweet Circle). It was ended in November 2023.

Likes Tab

The options are the same as those in the Tweets Tab (above). These are any posts that you have clicked the heart icon on. You may notice that some are just links to Tweets (https://twitter.com/handle/status/#####). Twitter made it very expensive for outsiders to query their API for data, so unfortunately, the contents of those tweets could not be retrieved and displayed here.

Chat Logs Tab (Direct Message History)

If it were possible without paying hefty Twitter API fees, the titles of the Chat Logs would be replaced by the Twitter user names instead of just the sender IDs that you see in the Title column. The Message Count column gives you an indication of how many messages you had in that that DM conversation.

In order to download the Chat Logs (in a compressed zip file), you will need to purchase the Messenger Chat History option. This runs a program that parses your DM records, puts them in easy to read HTML files, and compresses them into a zip file for easy download.

To deter privacy abuse, we are not making chat logs available to import into WordPress. Instead, they will be available as HTML files in a zip file that you can download. You will then be able to open the files on your local computer.

Chat Media (Direct Message Photos and Videos)

If it were possible without paying hefty Twitter API fees, the titles in the Chat Media column would be replaced by the Twitter user names instead of just the sender IDs that you see. The File Count column gives you an indication of how many photos or videos you had in that that DM conversation.

When you click on a link in the Title column, you'll see a familiar table with the same form options as Tweets (see above). Instead of seeing "Create Post" buttons, you see "Create Gallery" buttons. When click the Create Gallery button, it will upload the pictures or videos in that row and create a post with that media included. A thumbnail preview collage will be created for the blog roll preview of that gallery post if there are multiple images. The "Upload Individual File" button just uploads the individual file to your media library and doesn't create a blog post.

Messenger photos and videos are available as an option to import media into WordPress. You often share these memories directly with your friends, but you don't share them on your timeline. When you upload to WordPress, they aren't turned into posts in a blog, but rather kept in your WordPress media library. You can then share them in blog posts that you then create. Please use discretion and don't abuse this feature.
